With Pictionary Family, it's your pencil that does the talking! You have to get your team to guess words or phrases by drawing them. An hourglass limits the time allotted to try and draw people, places, animals, objects, or actions. The team that reaches the end of the game, having won the most challenges, wins.
Objective of the game
Guess enough words to reach the finish square. The first team to reach the final square and find a last word wins the game.
To start
After removing the Category cards from the deck, place all the cards in the shoe. Place the hourglass and the shoe on the table.
Form teams with, if possible, the same number of players. Each team will be provided with a pencil, a notepad, a Category card and a colored cube which will be placed on the Starting square.
Each team chooses a cartoonist – the one who will draw the first word.
Each team rolls the die; the one that gets the highest number starts.
Categories
Each card contains 5 categories of the same color as the spaces on the board.
- Yellow: Person / Place / Animal
- Blue: Item
- Orange: Action
- Green: Difficult
- Red: Challenge (any type of word)
Game principle
The artist takes the first card from the shoe and secretly reads the word he must draw.
The hourglass is turned over and the illustrator has one minute to get their team to guess the word.
If the team finds the word, they continue playing and roll the die. They then move their cube the corresponding number of spaces and choose another artist. This artist draws a new card, and the hourglass is turned over. They must draw the word in the color of the space where their team's cube is located. The artist must change each time a new word is chosen.
As long as one team retains the die, they continue to draw.
If the word is not found within the time limit, the die passes to the team on the left. The team receiving the die begins its turn by drawing a new card from the deck but does NOT ROLL the die. The hourglass is turned over and a new turn begins.
You must play the word of the color of the square where your cube is located. You only roll the die if you have found a word in less than one minute, or if you have found a word before the other teams in a CHALLENGE event.
A team remains on the same square until it has found the mystery word. Several cubes can be on the same square at the same time.
During a CHALLENGE round, the card is shown to the artists on each team. The hourglass is turned over, and all the artists simultaneously draw the same word for their respective team. The first team to find the word wins control of the die to roll it again immediately…
Game over
A team must reach the final CHALLENGE square to have a chance of winning the game. To win, they must possess the die and be the first to find the word.
The Dice Challenge
This optional die can be used to spice up the games. At the start of the round, roll the Challenge die to see if the round will include a variant. If the word played is a CHALLENGE word, all teams must do what the Challenge die indicates.
- Other hand: artists should use their "other hand" to draw. If you are right-handed, use your left hand and vice versa.
- Eyes closed: the artists must draw with their eyes closed.
- In one stroke: cartoonists must never lift their pencil, and must draw in a single stroke.
- Two images: the artists must draw two words from the card. One of the words must be of the correct category (i.e., the color of the square where the team's cube is located) while the second word can be any word on the card.
